I use reference photos for commissioned artworks. Preferably, I like to meet the animal(s) I will be painting or drawing. This gives me an insight into their character, and I check their colouring (this can differ on photos & monitors).
If the painting is a surprise gift for a loved one, or a memorial piece, I will work from client’s reference photos (subject to quality checking for suitability - a great painting can only be created from using good reference materials)
Prices start at £90 for an unframed single animal portrait using acrylic, or oil, on either linen canvas, or board.
Sizes start at 30 x 30cm (12 x 12”), this is usually suitable for single ‘head studies’ for most breeds of dog and cat.
Larger animals, (horses, llamas, etc) or multiple animals I would suggest different sizes and formats which can be discussed prior to commencement of the work.
Timescales – Acrylic studies can normally be completed and varnished within 7 – 10 working days.
Due to the nature of the curing or hardening process of oil colours, these can take up to a month before being ‘dry’ enough to collect (or deliver). Oil paintings require a further 4 months curing time before a protective varnish can be applied. Varnish protects the painting from dust and smoke, in years to come the painting can be cleaned of the 'dirty varnish' without harming the actual painting.
Once you are happy to proceed, and finished size, reference material and timescale are agreed, a 50% non refundable deposit is required before work commences.
